Two Leiden researchers receive Rubicon grant for research abroad

Thanks to a Rubicon Grant, two Leiden researchers who recently were awarded their PhDs will be able to conduct research at a research institute abroad

Process of ageing in the brain

Neurolinguist Fatemeh Tabassi Mofrad will spend two years doing brain research at the University of Oxford. The risk of age-related cognitive decline has increased, while the associated behaviour in the brain and underlying genetic factors are not fully understood. Tabassi Mofrad will uncover patterns in brain connections and gene variations that cause cognitive decline, paving the way for new interventions to prevent dementia.

This or that

Linguist Camil Staps will spend two years researching at Leibniz-Zentrum Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft in Germany. The word 'that' is often used to refer to an object far from the speaker: 'that book'. But 'this' and 'that' can also be used in other contexts, e.g. 'I know it is raining'. Staps will explore the surprisingly varied interpretations of demonstratives through large corpora and reading experiments.

About the Rubicon grant

The Rubicon grant allows these young researchers to do their research at a foreign institute that offers the best environment for their research. The amount of the grant depends on the chosen destination and the duration of the stay. Annually, NWO and ZonMw can fund around 60 young researchers within Rubicon (for a total amount of 7 million euros divided over three rounds).
