On the 10th of June, Tiemen Cocquyt, curator of Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, will give a lecture about insights in 17th century observation and visualisation. The lecture will be given in Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, from 15:00 - 16:00 o'clock.

In the first phase of the research project of Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, Visualizing the Unknown, the museum has used its collection to research the exchange between observation and visualisation in 17th century microscopy. In the lecture, Tiemen Cocguyt looks back at the insights which this phase provided. The lecture will answer the following questions: What value do museum objects provide in historical research? Were Van Leeuwenhoeks microscopes really so much better? And what makes it useful to observe Van Leeuwenhoek's 'selfmade man' within the wider 17th century microscopic milieu?

Visualizing the Unknown is a part of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek year, which sees lectures and an exhibition take place in Rijksmuseum Boerhaave all throughout 2023, centred around Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's life and microscopy.
