From the water’s perspective, the historical city looks completely different!
Leiden by water
In a city with plenty of canals and moats, with rivers which lead to the lakes or beach, a boat ride should really be high on your list. From the water you have a perfect view of the facades of the historical city and the waterfront homes and houseboats provide that unique glimpse of the Dutch life. Second to Amsterdam, Leiden has the most water streaming through its sluice gates. The historic city centre of Leiden has a stunning total of 28 kilometres of canals and moats. The 88 occasionally quite extraordinary bridges can be viewed perfectly from the water.
A tourist boat provides a gorgeous view of the city and its environment. On request, it includes a guide who will tell all about the historical city centre while the boat traverses every highlight of Leiden. There is a wide variety of optional packages with lunches, informal drinks and dinners on board. In closed and open boats, including the option of a warm blanket for the chillier days.
An adventurous and active option is offered in renting your own transport over water, also excellent for team-building. The possibilities are endless: from stand-up paddling across the canals, navigating the waters in an electric sloop, old-fashioned rowing, canoeing or kayaking, to sailing across the Kagerplassen.
Rondvaart Leiden (operated by De Drie Geuzen tours) organises boat tours across the characteristic Leiden canals, the Kaag lake and the flower fields of the Bollenstreek. They have bigger and smaller boats at their disposal, including 4 big boats that can seat up to 55 people, both open and closed.
There are several options for catering onboard, including lunch, high tea, coffee/tea or informal drinks. Rondvaart Leiden offers a special evening package: the culinary boat ride in which each dish is served in a different waterfront restaurant; the boat travels from dish to dish. The Rondvaart Leiden website lists several culinary packages to fuel your inspiration.
Rondvaart Leiden also rents out electrical sloops which you navigate yourself, for company excursions, bachelor parties, weddings, graduation parties or just a fun trip on the water. During the warmer months, there is a daily water excursion starting at 13:00, with a city water excursion at 14:30 with a skipper and/or guide starting from Boommarkt.
In addition, De Drie Geuzen organises various relaxing, active and creative group excursions such as guided walking tours, city games, theatre dinners and workshops, perfect for a company excursion, bachelor party, family day or team excursion. While hiking, the most beautiful spots of the city will be visited. Along the way, the group will meet important people from the history of Leiden. The costumed actors have a plethora of stories about the history of Leiden.
