With expert Prof. Mirjam de Bruijn (Universiteit Leiden & Afrika-Studiecentrum)
The conflict in the Sahel (West and Central Africa) is frequently described as a struggle taking place in both the physical and digital realms. Several West African countries are witnessing a concerning rise in jihadist and criminal groups. Additionally, coups in countries such as Niger, Burkina Faso, Gabon, and even (failed) coup attempts in Guinea-Bissau and Gambia are becoming more prevalent. However, these conflicts are not confined to the physical arena; the battle is also waged online.
Professor Mirjam de Bruijn, an expert in this region, will provide a concise overview of the current situation. She will delve into the ways in which fake news and digital tactics are employed to achieve specific goals and the impact this entails. Following Professor Mirjam de Bruijn's introduction, the floor will be open for discussion and knowledge exchange on this intricate situation and the associated challenges.
The program runs from 17:00 to 18:15. The doors open at 16:30, and a reception will take place after the event.
