Living Within Planetary Boundaries

How can we bring our planet back within safe environmental limits? In this Tuesday Talk, Professor Jan Willem Erisman explores the Dutch nitrogen crisis, the challenges of transforming our food systems and the role of science in finding sustainable solutions.

Humanity is pushing Earth's environmental systems beyond their safe limits. Of the nine planetary boundaries that define a safe operating space for humanity, seven have already been crossed. In this Tuesday Talk, Getting within Planetary Boundaries, Professor Jan Willem Erisman explores the changes needed to move towards a more sustainable future.

The Dutch nitrogen crisis provides a compelling example of how environmental, economic and societal interests intersect. Through this case study, Erisman examines the challenges of transforming our food systems, managing natural resources and balancing competing priorities. He highlights why addressing complex sustainability issues requires an approach that considers both ecological limits and societal needs.
