On Tuesday, May 21 at 8 p.m., astronomer Jeffrey Bout will give a lecture at the Leiden Old Observatory about the discovery of the Milky Way. The lecture is organized by Leidse Weer- en Sterrekundig Kring.

The Milky Way looks beautiful from a dark place. It has been admired and studied by humans for centuries. This led to many discoveries, also made by Dutch astronomers.

The Milky Way contains many stories: about the life of stars, about gas and dust or about a black hole hidden in the center. Our Earth appears to be part of this immense and complex system. And the Milky Way turns out to be an island in a vast cosmic ocean. The awe that people in ancient times had for the Milky Way is entirely justified.

Jeffrey Bout is a graduated astronomer from Groningen. He gives many guest lessons, lectures and courses in the Northeast Netherlands.
