In recent years, the conflict and problem-solving capacity of the justice system has been high on the political, scientific and social agenda. The central question here is to what extent the law can provide citizens with adequate solutions to their legal conflicts and problems. Are citizens being helped sufficiently to act adequately in legal disputes, processes and procedures, and do citizens also have sufficient access to those procedures? How can conflicts be avoided? Are their interests adequately represented in court and in out-of-court processes, and to what extent can the law and judges also provide solutions to the problems that citizens and society face? The Conflict Resolution Institutions (CoI) research group of the Universities of Leiden, Utrecht and Nijmegen has been studying these questions over the past five years and will present its findings at this conference.
