In this lecture, Dr Daniël Warmerdam explains how CRISPR works and how this technology offers new possibilities for the treatment of genetic diseases. He also discusses why many patients do not yet have access to these promising therapies.

CRISPR makes it possible to edit DNA with great precision, thereby offering new opportunities for the treatment of genetic diseases. In this lecture, Dr Daniël Warmerdam explains how CRISPR works and, using real-world examples, demonstrates how researchers are developing therapies that aim to correct the genetic cause of a disease, rather than merely treating the symptoms.

The lecture will also address the challenges that remain. Why are these innovative treatments not yet available to all patients? And what role can researchers, policymakers, companies, patients and society play in making new therapies accessible and affordable?
