Welcome to Leiden! We are very proud to be the host city of the 23rd Congress of the Rei Cretariae Fautores you are attending. Leiden is a city where knowledge and culture are engrained in its DNA. Situated at a historically important junction, where waterways and roads cross, lies a city that will enchant you: the city of Leiden, famous for its university, museums, waterways, and alms-houses. The spirit of the Golden Age lives on in this medieval city where Rembrandt was born, and which has inspired countless amounts of other influential painters. Ever since, Leiden continued to attract those that were on a quest for knowledge and freedom of expression, from the Pilgrims to Albert Einstein, the historic canals, the beautiful buildings, and alleyways have surrounded those who have made important discoveries for centuries. We hope you enjoy your time here in Leiden.
About the venue
The beautiful historic monument that is Stadsgehoorzaal dates from 1891 and was built in neo-Renaissance style – a style that can now be found hardly anywhere else in the Netherlands. You can enjoy a wide range of concerts here, from classical to pop. The Stadsgehoorzaal is particularly praised for its excellent acoustics, and many concerts and CD recordings are held here every year.
At the end of the 12th century, in a period of time when wood was the building material of choice, people built a stone tower next to the residence of the Count of Holland. This is why the building is called 'Gravensteen' (Stone of the Count).
The Gravensteen used to serve as a refuge for the counts of Holland, but also as prison and execution location. The city of Leiden got hold of the prison in 1463. In the centuries afterwards, the Gravensteen was renovated and expanded. The building was expanded with an extra wing and a galery, was heightened and got a staircase tower. In 1853, the last execution took place in the square in front of the Gravensteen. Afterwards, the building served as storage, and the Faculty of Law used to take location in the Gravensteen. Currently, it houses several organisational offices of the university.
