Museum De Lakenhal is a source of inspiration for everyone!

Museum De Lakenhal is the museum for art, crafts, and history in Leiden. The collection ranges from highlights of ancient art, such as Lucas van Leyden's Last Judgment, masterpieces by Leiden artists and fine painters, modern classics from De Stijl and Kamerlingh Onnes, to contemporary works by local, national, and international artists. Additionally, the museum sheds light on the city's eventful past.

Housed in a monumental 17th-century inspection hall for woolen fabrics, the building underwent careful restoration and modern architectural expansion from 2017 to 2019. The unique encounters between the present and the past that take place here make Museum De Lakenhal an inspiration for everyone.

About museum de Lakenhal

The renovated Museum De Lakenhal is a perfect venue for your receptions or events. We illuminate the past, present, and future in a unique way. The Achterplaats, the Auditorium, the Atelier, and the Voorplaats offer opportunities for organizing special events, including symposia, lectures, receptions, and (walking) dinners. Private events can take place both during and outside regular museum hours. For inquiries and possibilities, please contact the Events department at events@lakenhal.nl.

Tailored exclusive tours can be provided by professional guides from the museum. Director-led and/or curator-led tours are also possible upon arrangement. The museum is located less than a 10-minute walk from Leiden Central Station, with the nearest parking garage being the Lammermarkt parking garage.

The Auditorium

The bright, open Auditorium in the public area of the museum is ideal for lectures and presentations. Additionally, the Auditorium, with its large windows, offers beautiful views of the Singel as a backdrop for receptions and parties. The Auditorium can be booked separately from the museum but always maintains a sense of connection through the textile wall covering designed by Aleksandra Gaca. Her brand-new and beautiful design, created specifically for the Auditorium, not only ensures perfect acoustics but also contributes to the space's characteristic and allure.

The Atelier

The Atelier brings together people of all ages for workshops, school visits, and family activities. Additionally, the Atelier provides space for lectures, meetings, or receptions for a select audience. The Atelier can be booked separately or in combination with the Auditorium.

The Achterplaats

From the central courtyard, the Achterplaats, all four sections of Museum De Lakenhal are visible and accessible. Traces of nearly 375 years of building history are displayed in full glory. During museum opening hours, this space serves as the central orientation area for visitors. Outside opening hours, this covered courtyard is excellent for receptions, dinners, and presentations. Besides telling one of the core stories of Museum De Lakenhal, you can enhance your event by visiting other core stories accompanied by a guide.

The Achterplaats is only available for booking outside museum opening hours.

Café Laken

Outside museum opening hours, the café, optionally together with the terrace, can be booked for private events.

Opening times

  • The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For opening hours during holidays, please check the website.
