Fifth Congress City in the Netherlands
In May of this year, the LCB once again claimed its place in the top 5 on the list of national conference destinations published by ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) for 2019. Number one remains Amsterdam, followed by Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht.
The ICCA ranking lists 500 cities worldwide that welcomed international conferences in 2019. ICCA applies strict criteria to rank for a conference. Leiden had 20 (ICCA worthy) international congresses in 2019, ranking 150 worldwide, in 2018 this was ranked 196. At European level, Leiden achieved 77th place. The Netherlands is doing well worldwide with a 9th place in the ranking with 356 international congresses on an annual basis.
Leiden will be European City of Science in 2022
The LCB has played a major role in bringing the international EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF conference) and the associated title of European City of Science to Leiden in 2022.
In Italy, the prestigious title European City of Science was officially transferred to the city of Leiden on 6 September. Henri Lenferink, Mayor of Leiden, received the title from Roberto Dipiazza, Mayor of Trieste, in the presence of Italian Prime Minister Conte. Last week, the Italian port and knowledge city was the scene of the international EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), the largest interdisciplinary science conference in Europe.
With the title European City of Science, Leiden as an international knowledge city has joined a select group of EU cities that are leaders in the field of Science, Culture, Innovation, and Green Capitals. In addition to the scientific offer, the program also offers an interactive public program of exactly 365 days with the motto "Every day a bit wiser".
