NWO has awarded eighteen promising researchers from Leiden University a prestigious Veni grant. This grant will enable them to further develop their own innovative research projects over the next three years and carry them out independently.
Room for independence and innovative ideas
The Veni grant allows Leiden researchers to shape their own research agendas, independent of established lines within their field. This freedom to work independently is essential for advancing creative, risky and groundbreaking ideas. It enables young scientists to develop new methods, work in an interdisciplinary manner and approach social issues from a fresh perspective.
Research ranging from care robots to galaxies
The projects that received funding reflect the breadth of research conducted at Leiden University. Tanja Ahlin, for example, is investigating how social robots can support elderly care, Leindert Boogaard is studying how cold gas fuels the growth of galaxies, and Qinyu Chen is developing a real-time speech model for speech disorder therapy. This variety demonstrates that the Veni grants not only strengthen individual careers, but also contribute to breakthroughs in a wide range of scientific fields.
