Breakthrough in the battle against cardiovascular disease

| LUMC

Researchers at the LUMC have tested a new drug called IC7Fc that treats cardiovascular disease. The drug could be a major breakthrough and step forward in the battle against cardiovascular disease, given that 17 million people worldwide die from cardiovascular disease every year. IC7Fc has a unique effect, as it not only lowers cholesterol levels but also inhibits inflammation.

Adapted version

IC7Fc is a modified version of IL-6, a signalling molecule that regulates processes in the metabolism of the immune system and fats and sugars. IL-6 can activate the immune system to fight infections, but it can also cause chronic inflammation if there is too much IL-6 present. IC7Fc has been modified to activate only the beneficial effects of IL-6 and avoid the adverse effects, such as chronic inflammation.

Further research

The drug is currently being tested on mice. The results are promising, as it reduces the formation of fat deposits in the blood vessels and has been shown to significantly lower cholesterol levels. In addition, the study found that the drug also prevents type 2 diabetes. The LUMC will continue to investigate the drug and hopes to develop a new strategy for the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
