New rector brings focus on open science and interdisciplinarity
Sarah de Rijcke has been appointed as the new Rector of Leiden University, effective 15 January 2026. She will succeed Hester Bijl as Rector Magnificus. De Rijcke is currently Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor of Science, Technology & Innovation Studies; she is known for her commitment to interdisciplinary research, open science and a transparent university culture. As rector, she wants to use her experience to lead the university in areas such as education, research, internationalisation, student welfare and academic freedom.
