Leiden, December 2023 – Hilton Garden Inn Leiden proudly announces the triumph of Chef de Partie Melvin van der Lans at the Flavour & Flair 2023 Europe Middle East and Africa Competition, hosted at the esteemed Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas in Qatar. This annual culinary extravaganza brought together Hilton's finest culinary talents from across the expansive EMEA region for a showcase of exceptional skills and creativity.
Themed 'Taste Unleashed,' the competition featured an array of gourmet creations, each inspired by rich storytelling and the diverse culinary landscapes of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The event showcased Hilton's commitment to culinary excellence, with five categories highlighting the exceptional talent within the organization. The Focused Service, Food category witnessed intense competition, with 28 team members from 10 properties participating, including Hampton by Hilton Bristol Airport, Hilton Rijeka Costabella Beach Resort & Spa, Hilton Garden Inn Riyadh Financial District, Conrad Dubai, and Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
A distinguished panel of judges presided over the event, adding to its prestige. Notable members of the jury included Chef Joe Barza, a renowned Lebanese celebrity chef and culinary consultant; Helen McGinn, a prominent UK-based TV personality and wine expert; and Chef Tom Aikens, an English Michelin-starred restaurateur. Internal judges, Emma Banks, Vice President, F&B Strategy and Development, EMEA, Hilton, and Pauline Wilson, Vice President, Focused Service Operations, EMEA, Hilton, brought their expertise to the evaluation process.
Melvin van der Lans emerged as the winner of the coveted 'Taste Hero Chef, Focused Service' award, a testament to his culinary prowess and inventive approach. Melvin's winning creation, 'Blooming Fields,' not only delighted the taste buds but also conveyed a nostalgic journey through his childhood in a Dutch village surrounded by vibrant flower fields.
