SELINA Workshop #3 (Leiden Netherlands, 5 - 8 February, 2024)

Welcome to Leiden! We are very proud to be the host city of the SELINA Workshop you are attending. Leiden is a city where knowledge, nature and culture are engrained in its DNA. Situated at a historically important junction, where waterways and roads cross, lies a city that will enchant you: the city of Leiden, famous for its university, museums, waterways, and alms-houses. The spirit of the Golden Age lives on in this medieval city where Rembrandt was born, and which has inspired countless amounts of other influential painters. Ever since, Leiden continued to attract those that were on a quest for knowledge and freedom of expression, from the Pilgrims to the oldest univeristy of the Netherlands, the historic canals, the beautiful nature, and alleyways have surrounded those who have made important discoveries for centuries. We hope you get inspired during your time here in Leiden!

About the venue

Plan of the workshop

Day 1 (5^th February 2024) travel time to Leiden, The Netherlands. Please check the travel section on this page for more info on travel. Executive Board meeting to be held in afternoon. Welcome reception will take place in the evening.

Day 2 (6^th February 2024) will focus providing insight into the state of play from a decision maker perspective. ‘What has been developed in SELINA so far to contribute to improved decision making? What are the needs from decision-makers?’ Several external decision makers will provide insight into ongoing initiatives related to SELINA. The Demonstration Projects

Day 3 (7^th February 2024) Excursion day. TBC field visit to the Demonstration Project Dunea,The Hague and a museum in Leiden.

Day 4 (8^th February 2024) will focus on advancing solutions communally, making stronger linkages between the decision maker needs and developments within WP3-5. Cross-collaboration between WP’s to support decision makers will be the central focus of today.

Day 5 (9^th February 2024) travel day.

For exact times/details of sessions/facilitators, coffee, lunch breaks, dinners, excursions please refer to the detailed programme which will be available by January ’2024 and shared with registered attendees. Please note that all times in the programme will be in local time (Central European Summer Time, CEST).

Leiden is easy to reach by train. The city centre is just a few steps from Leiden Central station. There are international train lines running to Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, all located within half an hour of Leiden Central Station. These connections run all across Western Europe, such as Belgium (Brussels, Antwerp), Germany (Frankfurt, Berlin), France (Paris, Lille) and the UK (London). Furthermore, Leiden is 15 minutes away from Amsterdam International Airport Schiphol.

Amsterdam International Airport Schiphol is one of Europe's major hubs. With over 120 airlines flying to and from Amsterdam to little under 300 destinations, it is always easy to get to The Netherlands. With trains running to Leiden Central Station every 15 minutes, Leiden is at an ideal location. From Rotterdam The Hague airport, bus takes you to Rotterdam Centraal Station from where you can take a train to Leiden Centraal. The trip takes about 65 minutes.
Within Europe, it is becoming more and more popular to make a green and budget-friendly choice when travelling: taking the bus. Companies like Flixbus and Eurolines provide travellers with an easy option to travel across Europe. Popular bus destinations around Leiden are Amsterdam (Schiphol Airport and Sloterdijk train station), The Hague (Central Station), Rotterdam (Central Station) and Utrecht (Central Station).
