Beneficial bacteria help to reduce negative emotions
Researchers Katerina Johnson and Laura Steenbergen investigated the effects of probiotics – also known as 'good bacteria' – on negative feelings. Their research showed that probiotics can help reduce negative feelings. They also explored in which individuals probiotics are most effective.
Probiotics
Probiotics, also known as good bacteria, are available in supermarkets or pharmacies, in tablet form or as a drink. Increasing attention is being given to probiotics, as they are not only beneficial for gut health, but may also support mental wellbeing. Researcher Katerina Johnson notes that probiotics can influence how a person feels or behaves. In animal studies, the effects on behaviour and the brain were promising. Although previous studies involving humans have also been conducted, the results were inconsistent. Therefore, the researchers adopted a different approach for this study.
